Families First – Family Health and Wellbeing

The Families First Health & Wellbeing Team provide an integrated programme to support children, young people and their families who are living, or at risk of living, in poverty throughout Newport; helping them to improve their health, safety, and to enjoy wellbeing.

Families First’s ethos is to ensure families are supported and encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. This may be in the form of universal health promotion messages and activities, or through specifically targeted health and wellbeing interventions depending on need. They aim to provide tailored support and intervention, at varying levels, to families with health needs and inequalities.

1:1 / Family support
We provide support via 1-to-1 work, family sessions and group work around areas including: physical inactivity, social exclusion, healthy eating and nutritional support, and emotional wellbeing.

Programmes
The Health & Wellbeing team also deliver a number of community and school-based programmes to support young people and their families.

These include:

PhunkyFoods
An award-winning early years and primary school programme. The aim of the programme is to aid schools and early years settings (EYS) in meeting healthy lifestyle curriculum requirements by delivering key, consistent health messages via a 10-week programme which incorporates healthy eating, food tasting, physical activity and emotional wellbeing sessions. These sessions arent currently running, but will return at a later date.

Healthy Schools / Communities
The Health & Wellbeing team are also able to support Healthy Schools Week / Community projects and groups via interactive sessions focusing on key health topics including healthy eating, smoking prevention, emotional wellbeing, Love Food Hate Waste, and healthy cookery workshops.

Healthy and Active Newport

The Healthy and Active Newport project is part of the Community Sport and Wellbeing Team working alongside the Family Health and Wellbeing Team funded by Families First.

Healthy and Active Newport is one of 17 projects in Wales, part of a national programme for Healthy and Active Fund (HAF) a collaboration between Welsh Government, Sport Wales, and Public Health Wales.

The Newport project is working in 8 x Primary Schools to improve levels of physical activity and improve mental wellbeing; decided by the Strong & Resilient Communities Intervention Board where it is governed and supported by partners such as Newport City Council, and Aneurin Bevan Public Health Team; in the East area of Newport linking to the developments in the area with the Neighbourhood Hub, Integrated Wellbeing Network, and new Wellbeing Collaborative Primary Care Centre.  The project will use our Wellbeing Coaches over the 3-year period until July 2022 to inspire children, teachers, parents, and families to get more active, healthier, and improve wellbeing; using digital technology through our partners Technogym ‘The Wellness Company’ to generate interest, promote and hook in participants in school, in the community and at home – hopefully for the long term! We will be measuring our impact and hoping to gain more funding with success of the evaluation for the future in other areas of the City of Newport.
